A gentle approach for bodies that have been holding on.
For people seeking more ease, lightness and vitality in their body.
Your body has been working hard to protect you. Sometimes that protection comes at a cost — movement that’s become guarded, energy that’s been diverted, a vitality that’s been quietly dimmed by the weight of what the body is carrying.
ConTact C.A.R.E Flinchlock Release is about restoring that vitality. Giving the body the conditions to release what it no longer needs, so you can move more freely, feel more like yourself, and engage with life more fully.

ConTact C.A.R.E. stands for Commonsense Approach to Real Ease.
The word “ConTact” is important too. This is hands-on physical work that cannot be done remotely. Your practitioner needs to be present with you, sensing and responding to what your body is doing in real time.
ConTact C.A.R.E Flinchlock Release is a martial arts-derived discipline that works with the body’s own instinctive self-protection patterns — the instinctive automatic responses the skeleton makes when surprised by sudden impact.
The Flinchlock Release method works with these instinctive patterns to support ease, lightness, and vitality. This is our practitioner framework, based on anecdotal experience — see below for more on the evidence base. -
ConTact C.A.R.E. focuses on addressing the physical effects of surprise — particularly the self-protective patterns left behind when the body is caught off guard and injured.
When did you last knock your shin on a tow-bar? Miss a step? Stub your toe on a chair? Trip on something you didn't see? Notice a bruise with no idea how it got there? Maybe you slipped on your driveway on the way to get the mail, fell off your horse, got pulled by your dog faster than you could react, or stumbled on uneven ground on a hike. A sport injury, a fall, a car accident. All these little missed steps, near-missed bad accidents — they add up.
Most of the time we barely stop to register them. We flinch, we carry on, and we forget.
But here's what your body does: it remembers.
Every surprise impact triggers the same instinctive response — the skeleton moves away from the incoming force before the brain has time to register what's happening. It's not a decision. It's the body's most fundamental self-protection reflex: automatic, instant, and faster than thought.
The ConTact C.A.R.E perspective is that at the site of impact, the bone contracts and stores the pressure of that moment. The body then reorganises its structure around it — quietly, efficiently, and completely without your awareness.
Because bones are the scaffold of the body, when the structure shifts, everything built on top of it shifts too. Movement becomes subtly guarded. Certain ranges feel restricted. The body adapts around what it is holding. And those adaptations accumulate. One self-protection pattern layered on another. Over time, what you feel on the surface — the tension, the restriction, the loss of ease — is the body doing its job faithfully. It is compensating for something held deeper in the structure.
We call these stored sites of structural self-protection: Flinchlocks.
They can be small or significant, recent or decades old. Some trace back to childhood. Their effects are cumulative and they sit quietly beneath the surface, doing their job, long after the original moment has passed.
Our job as practitioners is to find those flinchlocks, one by one, and give the body the conditions it needs to let them go — for good.

Sessions are gentle, fully clothed, and guided entirely by your comfort.
No cracking, no manipulation, no force. You are in charge of your position throughout. We start with a brief conversation about what you’re noticing and what you’d like to focus on. The practitioner then observes and listens — to what holds still in the middle of movement, to what the body is ready to let go of. The release itself is subtle. People often describe leaving feeling lighter, more spacious, more settled in themselves and this feelings carry on in the following days and weeks.
We are Stephanie and Fabian.
We are West Auckland-based practitioners of ConTact C.A.R.E Flinchlock Release — students of the founding dojo in Ngatea, and genuinely committed to this work.
Stephanie is a fully qualified practitioner with three years of full-time clinic experience. Fabian is a practitioner student in his final training year, and also a registered counsellor, narrative therapist, holistic nutritionist, and Tai Chi instructor with over a decade of practice.
Between us we bring different skills, different backgrounds, and different ways of being with people — but the same instinct: that the body knows what it’s doing, and our job is to listen.
We work with people, companion animals, and horses.
